Europe
Scheduled restart
Europe shut down and came back. Not one of the daily restarts.
About seven people were playing on Europe when it restarted for ten seconds to load a performance update. This was planned, not a crash, and nothing needed doing except logging back in.

About this restart · written 2 September
How it went
12:12:01 UTC
A performance update to how a recorded duel clip gets played back is placed on the server. It does nothing until the next restart.
12:47:48 UTC
The server is restarted by hand to bring the update in.
12:47:58 UTC
Back up and taking players, ten seconds later.
What changed
Watching a recorded duel back used to rebuild every player and mob in the clip separately, reading through the whole recording once for each one. A busy clip - several players, a few mobs - did that reading over and over for no reason: everything it needed was there the first time through.
It now reads a clip once, building every entity in it in the same pass. What a clip looks like when you watch it has not changed at all - it plays back exactly as it always has, it just gets put together faster, especially for a clip with a lot going on in it.
Why a restart
The update sits in a file the server only reads when it starts, so it did nothing for the thirty-six minutes it sat there before the restart brought it in. Ten seconds is what a restart costs on this box - nothing else about this one was different from any other.
